Play NES Games on Glitch

Where it all began.

Platform Overview

The Nintendo Entertainment System launched in Japan in 1983 as the Famicom and arrived in North America in 1985. It single-handedly revived the video game industry after the devastating crash of 1983, proving that home consoles still had a massive market when backed by quality control and iconic software.

Powered by an 8-bit Ricoh 2A03 CPU clocked at 1.79 MHz, the NES delivered a 256×240 resolution with up to 54 colors, 25 of which could appear on screen at once. Its five dedicated audio channels produced some of the most memorable chiptune soundtracks in gaming history.

The NES became home to franchises that would define the medium for decades — Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and Mega Man all got their start here. With roughly 800 licensed titles released in North America, the NES cemented Nintendo's dominance and established the template for the modern console industry.
